Goals for Introductory Plant Pathology
- Students will learn Basic Principles and Concepts of Plant Pathology including:
- Koch's Postulates
- Disease Triangle
- Parasitic Balance
- Parasitic Mechanisms
- Host Plant Resistance Mechanisms
- Flor's Gene for Gene Concept - and interpretation for "new" biology
- Properties of Parasitic Taxa
- Plant Health Management Strategies
- Students will apply Principles and Concepts of Plant Pathology to specific diseases of importance to:
- Society,
- History,
- Specific majors or areas of interest.
Agronomy, Classical, Horticulture, and Turf are the categories for specific disease competence.
- Students will be able to construct a "Disease Cycle" for any plant disease and design a Plant Health Management Strategy based on the disease cycle.
- Students will consider multiple factors including; host and parasite biology, plant culture, epidemiology, environment, and economics when designing and implementing a Plant Health Management Strategy.
- Student will present oral and written "arguments" based on facts and objective reasoning.
- Students will experience team activities including writing, role-playing, and discussion responses.
