READ THIS! Awareness, Familiarity, Competency, and Mastery are levels of understanding that may be applied to any field of study. Having now completed your introduction to the field of Plant Pathology; you have the opportunity to demonstrate your level of comprehensive understanding by answering one of the following questions.

Study Questions

  1. Introductory Plant Pathology is a college level course taught through out the world by many different teachers to students of varying interests.
    a. List eight (8) basic concepts and ten (10) diseases you would expect anyone having taken such a course to be competent to discuss?
    b. Explain each concept in detail using at least one of the plant diseases you selected in the top ten diseases.
    c. What are the next three basic concepts and why did you not choose each of them as among the top eight?
    d. What are the next three diseases and why did you not choose each of them as among the top ten?
As a cautionary note; if you insist on a narrow focus, application, or treatment, expect a narrow score.

  2. Select a specific disease from each of three different plant pathogenic taxons (Virus, Bacteria, Protists/Chromists, Fungi - ascomycetes, Fungi - basidiomycetes, Nematodes).
For each disease perform the following:
    1. Using the Infection Cycle as a template; Estimate (reasonable) latent and incubation periods
    2. Plot a hypothetical Disease Progress Curve (DPC) (assume a single infection focus)
    3. Calculate the Area Under the Disease Progress Curve (AUDPC)
    4. Using the Infection Cycle as a template;Propose a Plant Health Management Strategy based on the estimated Latent and Incubation periods.
    5. If you propose specific chemical intervention at some point, draw a graph and explain what happens to the DPC and AUDPC?
    6. Plot the resultant curves if your estimates of Latent and Incubation periods are "off" by 2X, and 0.5X?
  3. As a cautionary note; if you insist on a narrow focus, application, or treatment, expect a narrow score.

  4. Bordeaux mixture has a long history as an effective pesticide.
    Discuss:
    1. its discovery and history surrounding it
    2. Why it is effective.
    3. Its limitations as a pesticide
    4. Why resistance has been slow to develop against it
    5. Compare it with two (2)specific modern day competitor pesticides with respect to:
      1. Mode of action
      2. Development of resistance
      3. Cost and effectiveness
